What is glucosamine sulphate?
Glucosamine sulphate is a naturally occurring amino sugar that can be found throughout your body. It helps to make up the liquid that surrounds the joints in your body, allowing them to move and function normally. Your body uses it to make macromolecules like glycosaminoglycans, glycolipids and glycoproteins, which help the body to produce cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles and synovial fluids – the main components of your joints.
What are joints?
The jury is out on the definition of joints: some people say it is the point in which two bones connect and others say it is the point where bones connect in order to move our body parts. So, there isn’t actually a definite answer on how many joints are in our body, but it is estimated that there are between 250 and 350. There are three different types of joints:
Diarthroses: the most prevalent joints in your body, these freely movable joints are also known as synovial joints. They require synovial fluid to allow every part of the joint to move smoothly against each other. Examples include the shoulder joint and knee joint.
Synarthroses: fixed or fibrous, the definition of synarthroses joints is two or more bones in close contact with no movement. Examples include the bones in the skull.
Amphiarthroses: these slightly movable joints consist of two or more bones held so tightly together that their movement is very limited. Examples of this is the vertebrae of the spine.
